Supplemental Notes: More on LD50

I am having some trouble seeing the difference between the LD50 and the LC50. I believe what we actually did in class was a LC50 lab. Is the only difference the way the toxin was taken in by the body? Also, what is the difference between the threshold dose and the TDLO? Thanks!

Okay- The LD50 is just representing a dose, so you’re right… the only difference is the way it enters. Also, the TDLO is below the threshold dose-remember the threshold dose represents the amount at which the chemical has an effect on the AVERAGE person. If a person is really sensative, they could still be affected below that threshold dose. The TDLO represents the lowest possbile dose that would affect ANY person.

The threshold dose is where the effect (lethality if an LD50 test) begins, and below which there is no effect. I think you are mixing up a few ideas. TDLO would be a sub-lethal effect, and would be below the TD, yes. I would say TD values effect the more sensitive end of the population, and the LD50 value effects closer to the average. Try to visualize the distribution graph I drew to go with the dose-response curve. Make sense?
