Saving Energy (and $) at Home
Interested in saving energy-I mean money? These are sites you may want to share with your parents:
18seconds.org (a movement to take 18 seconds and change out an incandescent bulb for a CFL)
Kilowatt Ours organization–get info or get involved. Check out their documents on tax credits and “phatom loads” from appliances left plugged in but off.
Energy Star home page–do a new home energy audit, get info and get new energy efficient appliances. You can get tax credits for these…
Also, some of you asked questions about mercury in CFL bulbs and proper disposal. You can go drop them at Home Dept or IKEA and/or try this info site:Lamp Recycle
Finally, as far as saving money on gas…it might be a good idea if the idea of “peak oil” is true. HowStuffWorks.com has a great explanation of how the idea of peak oil works.
While you can’t control peak oil, you can do a small part by driving something more fuel efficient. You can consult the EPA Green Car Guide website before shopping next time. Even if you buy a hybrid, how you drive still matters….check out this story about driving hybrids on NPR.
