Summary

What did I learn? A simple question that only brings an answer that can’t truly be illustrated. Throughout my week in a car dealership I feel like I learned what it’s like to run a company. Having run a smaller company before I’ve been presented with this feeling in the past but not in this [...]

OCD to the MAX

Day 5 (final): Today was my last day, I spent most of the day working with the ladies in the business office, filing, entering data, organizing, filling the printers, and sorting out obsolete files. In the computer system I logged all of the recent walk in clients who were looking at cars, entering what car they had looked at and what their car was (for a possible trade in). I filtered through some of the clutter in the office that had accumulated due to the ladies doing their work all day and not ever having a moment to just sit down and clean up the file cabinets. Following this I went to the main file cabinet with all business logs and records and took out companies who were no longer associated with LMC and put them in a box to be stored with the dozens of other boxes upstairs.
(50+ hours complete!)

Business Office + Repo

Day 4:
Today I started my day working with the salesmen, taking cars to the autobody shop as well as another shop not owned by the dealership. It’s ideal that all cars are in PERFECT working condition and look spotless before the customers take home or even look at the cars. While we were out we met several people who were interested in cars but were not able to come to the dealership, so we met them at their work place. Once we returned I helped out in the office filing papers regarding cars that were on the lot that had had their tires filled with nitrogen (recommended).

Parts

Day 3: Today, I started off my day working in the parts department. The car mechanics come in and out and in and out, from the service garage all day looking for parts to put into each car as well as oils to do oil changes and fills. Lancaster Motors also does parts ordering for customers looking for a special part to fix their car themselves with. All special parts are delivered to the parts department. Throughout the day I took orders, got people their parts, and got oil and other pieces for the mechanics. I followed up the rest of my day doing some paper work and filing for the nice women that work in the business office.

Service shop

Day 2: Today I spent the most part of the morning working and watching in the service department. People through all hours of the day would drive their car in looking for an oil change, repairs, etc. Order forms have to be filed on everyone, information on each and every customer taken; their name, number, car, insurance, etc. Later throughout the day I tagged along taking a Buick that a woman backed into a poll down to the autobody shop to get a quote for her, what you assume the price will be is normally wrong once they give you the quote. My guess: ~1,100… Real Price: $1700!!!

Relationships, relationships, relationships

Day1: A reoccurring concept that all managers, the owner, and the salesmen/women had was; building relationships with those near by. Lancaster is a smaller town, meeting and knowing people around town will result in sales for you and the dealership. But knowing people is only part of the process. You want to build a personal relationship, be friends with your clients and potential clients. Send out hand written birthday cards, and other memorable letters that they’ll keep. But it’s not just about the enter, it’s also about the exit. Making the customer happy is a big deal. During my first day alone I met several people who had bought at the dealership in the past, some even as many as 3, 4, or 5 times. They come back because they have a good experience every time and the dealership and salesmen take care of them.

My Project

My life goal is to be the CEO or the owner of a highly successful company. So for my high school senior class 2011 internship project I will be shadowing the owner of Lancaster Motors. I hope to learn and grow from my experiences during this project. During my internship I hope to learn about management, sales, and running a company.
